Materials List

Calvin -

I've pretty much made up my mind that while I'm enjoying the wood build as a side project, I'm going to switch to an all styrene build for my first droid.

I'm about to put in an order for styrene, and I wanted to get an accurate list of the amount needed before I placed the order, as for right now it'll be 2-3 weeks in between order and pickup for me here in Orlando.

If I'm reading the plans right, I should be able to make the frame in 1 4x8 piece of 3mm styrene, correct?  I'm looking at ordering maybe 3 sheets to start, and hoping that gets me through the legs and frame.  does this seem accurate?

Also, where are you getting your Weld-on from?  I need to check with Colonial again, but figuring the where and what would be good.
BLT2100

Hey, It's me LOL On the Styrene you should be able to get the Frame, Skirt, and some towards the Legs as long as you put it on the plastic wisely. So probably 2 pieces of 3MM and 2 for the .40 we use every piece, when there is smaller stuff to be made we use our Scraps.
Blsith

Thanks.  I'm still a little bit confused on how much I need for each stage of the build, but I'm getting a better handle on it.   It's the one place on Dave's documentation where I've gotten confused while doing the styrene research.

From my reading it sounds like I just need 3mm (.125) to get the frame started, correct?  What is the 9mm (.40) sheet used for?
admin

The 3mm would give you a complete frame and more.
The .40 will be for the skins around the frame and much more.
It really doesn't take allot of styrene to get the build going

I put in an order for 2 sheets of 3mm for now, to get me started.  Hopefully the branch transfer @ Farco will be in before the build day in Oct, and I'll have gotten some work done on it.

I'm going to keep plugging away at the Wood Frame as well, but it's going to be a back-burner project.

9mm (.40) sheet for the skins?

I think that's a typo, and it's actually 1mm (.040") sheets for the skins.  9mm wouldn't wrap around very easily!
psycogremlin

That's what I was thinking 9mm skin would make it pretty solid though Mr. Green
Spanner Murraan

Sure, if you could get it to wrap right.  Wink
psycogremlin

use a blowtorch? Mr. Green

WOOOOAAA there horsey !!!!!

Talk about burning down the house,
Now it's,
Burning down the droid.

LOL you guys are Crazy!!!!!
Spanner Murraan

My mom always told said "if Zac cant fix it with a hammer, wrench or a blow torch, he's hopeless"

So I better figure out how to incorperate atleast one of those tools into my styrene droid, LOL

One time mom left her '79 Camaro with me and Grandpa for 3 weeks for a paint job while she went on vacation.  When she came back it had over 900hp and bubblegum slicks in the rear.  Funny thing is, we Forgot all about the paint.  Had a Nice new coat of primer, though.
BLT2100

Holt Cow Zac!!! I bet your mom had her belt out, Did you get in much trouble? LOL remind me not to ask you to paint my car LOL.
psycogremlin

Guess this is as good a place to ask as any.

Where around Jacksonville can you get spay adhesive and an applicator bottle?
admin

Spray Tack you can get at Hobby Lobby and the Weldon bottle you can get at
Farco.

I'm guessing Farco has the Weldon 3 as well?
admin

I'd get the big can of Weldon 3 and a tube of Weldon 16.
16 comes in handy here and there.

Thanks for the info. Grabbed the bottle and tack today.
Farco has them, like ya said, and weld-on 3 & 16.

Not quite to the part I needed the applicator yet but wanted to get it so I had it when I get there instead of waiting to get it and then needing to make a trip. But the build is finally underway for me. Starting to learn a few little things that I'm sure any styrene builder knows and take for granted, like don't have the cutting bit spinning too fast or it melts the styrene back together, I learned that one the hard way and fairly quickly Mr. Green

Brian,

I have been told that the 3 sheets showing in Jacksonville’s inventory is bogus.  No one in our company has this material on the floor.  When I check the “history” on this part number it looks like the last purchase made by any of us was in April.  I spoke with my Ft Lauderdale branch (they purchase for all of us) and it will be at least 8-12 weeks before the sheets are ready for shipping (resin shortage) from the manufacturer.  Please advise if you wish to cancel this order and reorder at a later date.  I am truly sorry for the inconvenience.

Best regards,

Did you put an order in at Farco?

When I got mine the lady in the office (in Jax) stated that they had all 3 types but the two non 1/8" were ordered for Brian but they had 12 sheets of 1/8". Which allowed me to be able to get two sheets. From what she was stating Jax normally has 1/8" while Orlando and Ft Lauderdale typically stock the other two types, one at each location, and just to call to order the other two and they could have them transferred here to Jax.

Not sure if your the Brian that has an order waiting in Jax or if there is another Brian out there that is getting all the styrene he needs for a droid.
admin

No it wasn't me.
I do need to get some 3mm so I can get these droids complete.
Calvin
Blsith

I had 2 .125 (3mm) sheets on order being site to site shipped from Jax to Orlando.

They are showing .125 out in all locations at this time, though.  2-3 month wait time.

I guess their system inventory was off, and you got the last few sheets that were left.  They are saying it'll be at least the first of the year before it's back in, and the price is unknown because there have been at least 2 price increases since the last time they ordered.

I did get a few other leads for places here in town, so I'll check with them I guess.
Blsith

It looks like I'm back in business!

Sabic had the 4x8 sheets for $40, and had 12 in stock here in Orlando.  Thus I should have my material today!

I guess I need to get a hold of Todd to buy some frame printouts today, too.
admin

I emailed you back. Did you get it?
I'm hoping Farco gets plastic soon, I'm running out.
Calvin
Blsith

It'll be at least February from what I'm being told.  If you need any, give a call to Sabic.  I'm not sure if they are in Jacksonville, but they definitely have an Orlando office, and they were $40 a sheet.

I have 3 sheets waiting to be picked up this afternoon.
DivaSith

Yes, they are in Jax..

Is this what I need to use to build a styrene frame?
Blsith

That seems expensive for the size sheet that it is.  I'm not sure where you are, but I think you can do better than that price-wise.
kerrie

I'm in Wisconsin, can you suggest a place I should order from?  I have been unable to find a local supplier.  Thanks!
BLT2100

Kerrie, Do you have a Farco where you live? if not Try other plastic companies in your area just let them know HIPS styrene. Laughing
Blsith

Sabic is in Milwaukee -

Laird is in Madison -

kerrie

Awesome!  I just called Lairds and they have them in stock. Thanks!  Now I can get started.
kerrie

I am picking up my Styrene today.  2 sheets of 3mm and I have ordered aluminum skins from Chani, do I need to order a sheet of .40 as well or can I just wrap the frame with the aluminum skin?
Thanks!
admin

Sorry Kerrie,
The styrene frame and skins have to be bonded with Weldon 3.
You will have to go all styrene.
Calvin
kerrie

for some reason I was thinking Chani's skins were aluminum but they are styrene.  I believe I have everything I need now except for the Weldon.
Blsith

Laird should have the weldon and the applicator.

On the knife front, Calvin is the bomb-digity!  I picked up one of the Kobalt knives at Lowes the other night, and it's 10,000x better than the Xacto one I had at the build day.

For those still gathering materials, I strongly suggest you get this knife
