Great new Product!

Hey guys and gals, I just wanted to share my experience with a new product I found.

I do a weekly-ish Paint and Finish corner over at the Mandalorian Mercs site, and I was testing a new product for use to give our armor a more metallic look (under scratches and such), and thought it would be great for doing an R2 dome or any other bare metal pieces.

Testors Metalizer Lacquer!

Metalizer is a Lacquer specially formulated for plastics that is completely buffable.  You spay it on a prepped surface and you can litterally buff this paint to a high gloss, metallic plate look!  I picked up two different kinds - the aluminum and the gunmetal - and both did not disapoint.  I spent about 10 minutes on a small piece of HIPS styrene with a buffing wheel and a soft cloth and i tell you, I could SHAVE with the reflection I got.  Far superior to any standard metalic spray paint I have every used. I think this would work great for Styrene or Squirrel domes for R2.  Also useful for anything you want to look like bare metal, and with the buffable quality, it will give a natural shine to areas of high wear.

The best part is, unlike Rub-n-Buff, the Metalizer is easy to paint over and will not pull up, or rub off.  and the best part is, if I didnt know better, I would think I would looking at plate aluminum, rather than Plastic.

Check your local Hobbytown USA or Hobby Lobby for this product.  Or you can buy it direct from Testors:

I give this Product 4 out of 5 Cogs for a brilliant, more metal-like appearance than standard spray paint.  The one draw back would be that it can be a little time-consuming to buff a large area to the sheen that you want.

Did you try it on top of any primer at all?  I may have to try this out on my R4 once I get to painting.  My dome is going to be fiberglass, so I'm pondering how it would work.

I did not.  I laid it directly to the styrene.  I am going to see how it does over Duplicolor Self-etching primer later this week.
